Dirt Rally is a car racing game for rally car fanatics. This game offers an amazingly immersive experience. Dirt Rally originally launched without a VR mode but later amended this with an update that now allows you to fully immerse yourself in many different environments and race tracks within this VR game.
Dirt Rally racing is one of the very few games with VR options, so it’s important to know everything you can about Dirt Rally VR including how to set it up correctly.
There are multiple gameplay options in this game, so it’s guaranteed you won’t get bored! This game will keep you glued to your seat for hours and hours and by the time you are done, you’ll feel ready for the real thing!
However, please remember to keep yourself in check when hopping in your car to go to the supermarket…
You may be the king of Dirt Rally but you’re in the real world now and crashing whilst trying to drift around your local roundabout has big consequences, and the body repairs cost money.

Many VR games that launch for PC headsets never launch for PSVR, which is a shame seeing as a lot of people have this VR platform because of its affordable price. The PSVR headset comes within a bundle on certain occasions.
However, Dirt Rally VR is unique from most games because it offers full support for PSVR headsets.
It’s important to keep note that for PSVR owners it means that you can experience a very innovative racing game on your headset. Also, you can play Dirt Rally in VR on every mainstream PC headset, if you haven’t tried this game already I fully recommend it.
How To Activate VR Gameplay In Dirt Rally
This can be confusing so here is a step by step guide to enable VR mode for Dirt Rally.
The game will stay in theater mode until you are in the car.
- Install Oculus Home and skip Rift configuration
- Install Revive (ONLY version 1.1.11 because it’s the latest version to work with Dirt Rally)
- Start Oculus Home
The next step is to make sure that “Use Desktop Game Theater While SteamVR is active” is unchecked (right-click Properties).
- Start SteamVR.
- Go to the system tray and right-click the Revive icon, click “Patch”. Browse to the Dirt Rally install directory, select drt.exe and click ‘Open’.
- Start the game normally from Steam, NOT the Revive menu in SteamVR (It doesn’t matter that it’s not under VR).
- It may look bad at this point, play around with settings. Maybe the resolution settings are low.
Ideal System Requirements
- OS: 64bit Versions of Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10.
- Processor: AMD FX Series or Intel Core i3 Series.
- Memory: 4 GB RAM.
- Graphics: AMD HD5450 or Nvidia GT430 or Intel HD4000 with 1GB of VRAM (DirectX 11 graphics card required)
- DirectX: Version 11.
- Storage: 50 GB available space.
Once you have it all set up, there are a few things you should know to give yourself the most immersive and realistic experience possible in the game.
Best with steering wheel and pedals attached for VR mode
To have the best experience in VR mode. It’s recommended that you buy a steering wheel and pedals to get the most out of the game. It adds to the experience creating the feeling of being there.
If you want the most intense and involved experience possible, then these attachments are the perfect option for you, although they aren’t completely necessary to enjoy this game.

10 Unique Locations With Multiple Track Options
There are ten beautifully unique locations in Dirt Rally VR and each has multiple track options within them that take you in different directions within the gaming experience.
With so many different tracks to choose from, it will take you plenty of time to discover all locations and tracks and become familiar with them, giving you lots of time to enjoy unique and new experiences.
Some tracks take you through winding forests, dirt roads, real towns in Finland and much more. The change of scenes is unique, which separates this game from the rest out there.
If you are someone who enjoys familiarity with locations then you’ll still be able to appreciate the fact there are multiple track options within each location.
Frame Rate Options
Dirt Rally on PC is playable in 90 FPS, which is very good, especially for a virtual reality racing game. A lot of VR games can’t handle high frames per second settings.
It also offers the option to change the FPS rate to suit your preferences, whether it’s perfect visuals or PC performance, the option is there.
If your PC is capable of handling the workload of 90FPS, I’d highly recommend playing the game in this mode. Listed at the start of this article are ideal system preferences for ideal gameplay for Dirt Rally VR.
Full VR Game
The great thing about Dirt Rally is it’s a complete game in VR mode. A lot of VR games at the moment are either short demos or still in development so the experience is very brief.
However, with Dirt Rally the game was already fully developed with the VR option added in later, giving you the full VR experience. With so many car options and track changes, Dirt Rally is one of the best games in terms of content to keep you entertained for hours on end.
Third-Person Perspective
Dirt Rally offers a third-person view. You can access this in the main menu settings if you wish to change the view. The game starts you off in POV by default, but some may prefer to change due to motion sickness.
Some people get less motion sickness with a third-person perspective, whereas some suffer more in this setting, it is unique to you. If you do change, be sure to take it slow initially to get used to the new settings and allow your eyes to adjust.
Conclusion
There’s no doubt that VR has the potential to change racing games as we know them, but the VR technology is still very new and still being developed for optimum enjoyment and functionality.
“It is going to be interesting to see how VR develops as a platform and whether there will be more mass market uptake,” says Coleman. “It’s a great fit for racing as generally speaking you are sat down and it feels extremely intuitive.
You can look around you and judge where the car is with far more ease than using a controller or wheel. When you combine VR with a decent wheel and seat you have a very compelling experience.”
With a bit of luck we’ll see more and more PSVR-compatible racing games released for the masses to enjoy, but it’s unlikely any game will be able to match the exceptional intensity of DiRT Rally in VR anytime in the near future.
This game is a brilliant, heart racing, intense and immersive experience. Highly recommended if you are after the ultimate VR gaming thrill. Give this a try, you won’t be disappointed.
